Children got rights

It was a huge community celebration. On June 16 KCC commemorated the students who had fought for freedom in Soweto in 1976 and raised awareness of the needs of the children of today.

June 16  is Youth Day in South Africa. People remember the students who fought and died during the Soweto uprising. They had stood up against humiliation and discrimination of the Apartheid regime and many of them paid with their lives. This year KCC organized a march through the neighborhood of Block NN. Children were dressed in vintage while staff marched in school uniforms.

During the march children where chanting songs, throwing sweets for the young spectators to catch, and presenting the banners they had made themselves. On the banners they were discussing subjects like youth unemployment, drug abuse and children's rights - issues that are still far from being solved in today's South African society. KCC children quickly were joined by other children who followed and marched with them.

After the march everyone was invited to stay at the centre. More than 200 children were served with some food and drinks before the celebration continued. Now, it was time for KCC to perform for their guests. From the very small children to the youth who danced to the songs from the "Sarafina!" movie they all got their go. They were flanked by some speeches and - partially unintended - funny performances from KCC staff and students from the Tshwane University of Technology who had helped to organize the event. However, the highlight was a short but very intense drama by KCC youth recapturing the events of 1976. People where moved and applauded strongly.

The celebration then ended with another meal for everyone. It was not only a good day for KCC but for everyone around. We are thankful for all those persons who helped out to make this event happen.
