Lunch with the Mayor

On Saturday, 06 September, KCC invited the executive mayor of Tshwane, councellor Ramokgopa, and famous actor Sello Maake Ka-Ncube to the lunch with the mayor charity event. The event was held at Van Tuka Lounge in Soshanguve, Block K.

The event was coordinated and organized by the Hearts of Gold, a group of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) communication students who volunteer at the centre to raise funds and also to create awareness for KCC. The event started with the representative of the students’ group, Diopelo Tona, introducing the team and welcoming everyone to the event and the Van Tuka manager, Ms Mashaku as well. This was followed by the director of KCC, Vestine Ntakirutimana, who introduced the children centre to those in attendance and telling them about its history and the challenges it faces which include transportation of donations and land to grow the centre to accommodate the growing number of children at the centre.

This was then followed by speeches from the mayor and Sello Maake Ka-Ncube who emphesised the importance of charity in communities. Councellor Ramokgopa said that we need to support initiatives such as Kgomotso Children Centre in our communities. "I always say that even though we, as politicians and celebrities get all the praise and attention, the real heroes are those, such as the people running KCC, who don’t get any publicity for the good work that they do", he added. Towards the end of his speech, responding to the challenges stated by the director of KCC about the centre needing assistance getting land to grow Kgomotso Children Centre to accommodate the growing number of kids coming there, the mayor invited the centre’s stuff and students to keep in touch with him so that his office can assist with the problem.

Sello Maake Ka-Ncube spoke about the role of men in society and how the world would be much better if men got their act together. He also got the attendants exited when he made a commitment to visit KCC and assist with its drama activities. “I hear that KCC does things related to drama. I will be coming to help with that, since that’s my line of work” said Sello Maake Ka-Ncube.

The event ended on a joyful note when the manager of Van Tuka Lounge, Ms Mashaku, announced, in closing, that the restaurant will be making a R5 000 donation to Kgomotso Children Centre. Another donation came from Kea Modise Moloto, who’s the founder of a women and young girls’ empowerment NGO, Bontle-Bame, and a regular contributor at KCC and she pledged R500 after the event.
