Looking back at 2020

Looking back at 2020, a year that has been very difficult to all of us, we want to thank those who supported us throughtout the year. After we had started with the We Can't Eat Air Campaign in April more organisations and people approached KCC to offer their help.

After successfully initializing the We Can't Eat Air Campaign with the financial aid of our support organisation Tshwane Township Kids KCC manager Kgomotso Nyalungo applied for food parcels from Food Forward after she had seen a post on social media. KCC was chosen among applications from Northwest and other areas and received a Rand 8 000 food voucher handed over by Mr Mbatha at Moruleng Mall Northwest.

The We Can't Eat Air Campaign was started in April 2020 when we saw the needs of the families of our children during lockdown. Many of them had no food and didn't know how to survive the next weeks. With the help of TTK we were able to give out food parcels to those families.

Shortly after, KCC got food parcels from the USAID organisation sent by the US ambassador who had been at KCC for a visit in early January 2020. They supported the We Can't Eat Air Campaign and more families could receive their food parcels.

And support didn't stop there. A lady donated Rand 4 000. A catering company called Kelizi partnering with Real Promotions visited KCC in June to drop off a donation of prepared meals. They came with the intention to cheer up kids after the long and stressful lockdown they had been through. Kids came to take their take aways and all of them were provided with masks. On Mandela Day plus fab donated groceries that were worth about Rand 3 000 and an additional 250 masks for all kids and staff.

During lockdown in April and May KCC staff had been in contact with kids through regular phone calls to them and their families. When schools re-opened again in June KCC started to go back to some programs as well. At first, kids came to be provided with a meal that they were asked to take home in their boxes. In July kids were allowed to come to KCC in small groups to get homework assistance. A rotating system was installed to give every child a chance to come in different groups between 11 am and 5 pm daily. Temperature was scanned, sanitisers and desinfectors placed at the entrance. During and after the lockdown the number of kids once more had been increasing with now even parents from far areas coming to register their kids.

Finally, as this dreadful year was coming to an end, KCC suprised the kids with a christmas celebration. There was a short programme which kids had a chance to tell how their lives were in 2020. Speeches were held by four kids of the centre and a christmas meal was prepared for all.

We want to thank everyone who supported us in our efforts to stay safe in our community this year. Thank you very much! We hope and pray that 2021 will be a year to move forward again. May we together successfully fight this pandemic. Stay safe!
